Big Island Wedding & Engagement Photography

The Big Island is geology on display — black-sand beaches, lava flows, volcanic craters, and 11 of the world’s 13 climate zones on one island. Hawaii weddings here look like nowhere else.

Where Hawaii weddings break the template

The Big Island is twice the size of all the other Hawaiian Islands combined, and feels like a continent. The Kohala Coast is resort country with white-sand beaches. Punalu‘u is one of the few black-sand beaches in the world. Mauna Kea’s summit is the highest point in the Pacific. Volcanoes National Park is the only place in the US where you can photograph an active eruption.

For couples who want a wedding photographed against a landscape no one else has, the Big Island is the move. Below is our Hawaii Island work and the planning notes we share with couples drawn to this island.

Getting married on the Big Island: what to know

Kona vs Hilo

Kona (west side) is dry and sunny, resort country. Hilo (east side) is lush, rainier, and feels off-the-beaten-path. Most weddings happen Kona-side.

Black-sand beaches

Punalu‘u is the famous one, with sea turtles regularly on the sand. Permit required for ceremonies. We help arrange.

Volcanic terrain

Kilauea, Mauna Kea, and the lava fields offer photography backgrounds you can’t find anywhere else in the US. Plan an extra hour for travel time.

Distances are bigger

The Big Island is the size of Connecticut. Driving from Kona to Hilo is 2.5 hours. We plan portrait sessions and travel realistically.

FAQ

Hawaii Island wedding questions, answered

What are the best Big Island wedding venues?

Top picks: Mauna Lani Resort, Four Seasons Hualalai, Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, and Volcano House (inside the national park). The range here is unmatched.

Can we get married at a black-sand beach?

Yes. Punalu‘u is the most popular. Wai‘ula‘ula on the Kohala side is quieter. Both require a state permit and respect for the resident sea turtles.

Can we photograph at the volcano?

Yes — Volcanoes National Park allows wedding photography with a Special Use Permit. The Halema‘uma‘u crater overlook is otherworldly at sunset.

How is the weather different here?

The Big Island has 11 climate zones in one. Kona stays dry and sunny most of the year. Hilo is tropical and rainy. We pick locations to match your weekend forecast.
